Lake Fishing Tips and Techniques

The sky is clear, the water calm, and you’ve got your trusty fishing rod in your hands. Summer is one of the best times to go fishing, especially so for lake fishing. But before you head out on the water, you should make sure you now what you’re in for. Lake fishing is pretty different from ocean or river fishing, and you should prepare accordingly.

Choose the right baitLake Fishing Tips and Techniques

It’s an obvious but important tip—the right bait is key to reeling in some good fish (or any fish at all). Since (most) lakes are freshwater, you’ll want to get freshwater bait such as:

  • Leeches
  • Worms
  • Maggots
  • Crickets
  • Crayfish
  • Minnows

Fish around inlets, outlets, and sunken structures

Fish will hang out in areas they find most comfortable, and these include the inlets and outlets (that is, areas where water enters or drains from a lake). They also like to hide in sunken structures, such as fallen trees, large branches, or man-made structures.

Look for weeds and greenery

Another place that fish like to hang out is among weeds and other forms of underwater greenery. This is where you’ll find the big lake fish such as pike, walleye, and bass, so get ready for a challenge.

Keep an eye on the weather

What the weather is like will strongly determine how the fish behave. For example, if there’s a strong breeze, bait fish will be pushed closer to the shore and the bigger fish will follow. Also, if there have been multiple, consecutive days of hot weather, the fish will be less hungry and less tempted to bite.

With these tips, you should be all set when you head out onto the lake next weekend. And if you’re in need of a dock for your fishing boat, consider purchasing a dock from V-Dock.
